One man was killed and three people suffered personal injuries in a three-car wreck near Venice, Florida Tuesday. The Florida Highway Patrol believes that a 33-year-old Port Charlotte, Florida man was traveling north on River Road in a Mustang shortly before 10:00 p.m. The FHP says that his Mustang crossed the center line and struck the left front of a southbound Dodge Neon with two people aboard.
The impact causing the driver of the Mustang to further lose control, while continuing to travel toward the north on River Road in Sarasota County. The Mustang then slammed head-on into a southbound Pontiac minivan driven by a 20-year-old Port Charlotte woman. The Neon spun around after the first collision. The minivan came to a stop on the west shoulder of the road after the head-on collision, while the Mustang came to a stop facing toward the west on River Road.
Authorities say that the Port Charlotte man who had been driving the Mustang suffered fatal injuries in the three-car pileup. The woman who had been driving the minivan that was struck head-on suffered critical injuries. She was flown to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Florida.
The two people who had been riding in the Neon, a 21-year-old North Port, Florida man and a 24-year-old Venice resident suffered injuries that the FHP says were relatively minor.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the late evening wreck. Authorities say that all of the survivors had been wearing seatbelts. The FHP continues to investigate whether alcohol played a role in the Sarasota County car accident, but officials have ruled out alcohol for the two drivers who survived the wreck, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
