One person was killed and five people suffered personal injuries in a car accident near Marion Lake Sunday. Officials in Polk County, Florida are still investigating the two-vehicle crash. At this point in the investigation, officials are not sure what direction either of the vehicles involved was traveling at the time of the injury producing and fatal accident, according to the Ledger.
However, preliminary reports indicate that deputies believe a 41-year-old Poinciana, Florida resident was traveling east on Lake Marion Creek Road around 6:00 Sunday evening in a van with a 15-year-old passenger. Authorities say that the van collided with a Volvo station wagon driven by a 35-year-old Kissimmee resident carrying three passengers. The accident was reported near the intersection of Lake Marion Creek Road and Poinciana Parkway.
A 33-year-old passenger in the Volvo suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck, and succumbed to the injuries at Heart of Florida Hospital. The driver of the Volvo was also taken to Heart of Florida with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two other passengers from the station wagon were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. A 52-year-old woman suffered critical injuries, while a 51-year-old woman suffered undisclosed injuries and is reportedly listed in stable condition on Orlando.
The driver of the van and a 15-year-old passenger were each taken to Orlando after the wreck. Authorities say that the driver is in critical condition, while the teen sustained injuries that authorities say are not life-threatening.
Details about what may have led to the serious car accident remain sketchy as deputies continue their probe. Authorities are not clear on which vehicle would have had the right of way when the cars collided. Officials say that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the tragic wreck.
Accident investigations can be complex matters, and it is unclear if any witnesses observed the accident. Authorities may have to rely on statements from the survivors and forensic evidence gathered at the scene of the crash in completing the official accident reports.
